What the Parekh Cards Survey Reveals about Wedding Trends

Weddings in India are hardly simple affairs. On the contrary, even the most modest weddings are laced with popular rituals and customs. From the baraat to the pheras and the vidai, opulence and exuberance shine through the costumes and the jewelry. The average budget for an Indian wedding has been estimated to be just shy of the INR 20 lakh mark, reports Hindustan Times

Our survey revealed that Bollywood has a large role to play in inspiring wedding celebrations. Here’s what we found:

Wah Wah Ramji

Sangeet has been a hugely popular pre-wedding ritual in Punjabi and North-Indian households. We found a profuse fascination for the ceremony where everybody gathers for a musical evening (even midnights) and songs of nuptial bliss and merriment are sung. The entire country is smitten by the Sangeet ceremony, courtesy the Barjatyas, Chopras and Johars of the Indian film industry.

Taare Zameen Pe

Movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Jodha Akbar and Band Baaja Baaraat have had the Indian audiences enamored by the brilliance and glitz of the jewelry that their female protagonists donned. Interestingly, we have found out that young ladies throughout the country have made it a point to get similar sets made for their D-day. Most brides-to-be are queuing up for royal kundan sets and jadau jewelry. Dresses have undergone a change in the sense that green and other colors are taking precedence over the traditional red.

English Vinglish

Once favored only by NRIs and westernized Indians, themed weddings have become popular with people who need a subtle wedding albeit with the color Indian marriages are supposed to bring. Movies like the highly acclaimed Monsoon Wedding by Mira Nair, Aisha and Hyderabad Blues have set off a trend of themed weddings. The beach wedding in Salaam Namaste is a popular choice.

Band Baaja Baarat

The much loved Band Baaja Baaraat was a movie about marriages. Many couples are opting to go for pheras and other rituals shown just like in some of the many weddings that the movie depicted. Also, the song sequence of the lead pair singing and dancing for the newlyweds has become a trend in big-fat Indian weddings. Reality show singers and dance troupes are being hired to lend the event the ‘Bollywood’ feel.
